Book Review: "How to Stay Married" by Harrison Scott Key

"How to Stay Married: The most insane love story ever told" is a humorous look at a not so humorous situation. Key's self deprecating humor and comedic spin on the trial of his marriage is a fun and lighthearted read. As he takes you through the saga of his marriage crisis, the crisis of faith for him and his family, you can really empathize with the humor if you have been through anything similar. He explores his complex emotions after discovering his wife was having an affair with a neighbor, recounting his personal journey of processing the betrayal, making the decision to forgive and fight for the woman he married, and ultimately winning back his wife's heart.

While Key's journey might seem different to you or my stand, I found a lot to connect with in the story and felt the humorous take on situation was refreshing and lifted my spirits, and helped me to appreciate the humor in my own situation. It's not a treatise on standing, or a deep spiritual dive into the discipline of prayer or spiritual warfare, it's a story. But there is a central element of faith in his story that was interesting to hear, and at times I truly commiserated with the author, for example hearing him retell the story of talking to his pastor about the situation and hearing his pastor offer, with the best intentions of course, to excommunicate his wayward wife.

I listened to the audiobook version of this, and the narration by the author really added a nice touch to hearing the story retold with his own inflection. i recommend this book for a bit of good-hearted comic relief, which was quite welcome in my situation, and maybe would be in yours as well.
